Why Stay in Davos

Davos sits at around 1,560m in the Graubünden Alps, making it one of the higher-altitude resorts in Switzerland. The Parsenn ski area above the town is one of the most extensive in the country, with runs descending to Klosters through varied terrain.

Two things shape the resort's identity: the skiing, and the World Economic Forum, which has met here annually since 1971. For travelers who are not WEF delegates, the WEF effect works in their favour — the hotels are calibrated for demanding international guests, and the infrastructure is maintained at a high standard year-round.

Atmosphere & Travel Style

Davos is functional in a way that Gstaad and St. Moritz are not. It does not perform exclusivity — it delivers infrastructure and ski access without the social overlay that defines some other Alpine destinations.

This suits a specific type of traveler: serious about skiing, not interested in being seen, and wanting a resort that works efficiently. Those who want village intimacy tend to prefer Klosters, 10 minutes away by train.

Luxury Hotel Scene

Alpengold Hotel is the strongest luxury choice — a 5-star property with a distinctive organic architecture, a large spa, multiple restaurants, and direct Parsenn ski access. The design sets it apart from traditional Alpine grand hotels.

Steigenberger Grandhotel Belvédère has been operating since 1875 and maintains a classical grand hotel atmosphere — better for travelers who want historic continuity over contemporary design.

Hard Rock Hotel Davos offers a more accessible entry point with a stronger entertainment orientation.

Best Time to Visit

December to March for skiing, with January dominated by the World Economic Forum — rates increase significantly and some areas are restricted. Avoid late January unless attending.

February and March offer the best combination of snow reliability and normal resort atmosphere.

Summer is underrated: the Davos Lake, hiking trails through the Flüela and Dischma valleys, and mountain biking routes are genuinely good. The hotels are quieter and rates are lower.

How It Compares

Against St. Moritz, Davos is more functional and less social. St. Moritz has the grand winter season theatre; Davos has more ski terrain and less social obligation.

Against Klosters, Davos is larger and better equipped for longer stays; Klosters is smaller, quieter, and more discreet. They share the same ski area and are 10 minutes apart by train — some travelers stay in Klosters and ski into Davos.

Against Zermatt, Davos is less iconic but more extensive. The Parsenn area is one of Switzerland's largest; Zermatt has the Matterhorn.

Getting There

From Zurich, around 2.5 hours by train via Landquart. From Chur, around 1 hour by direct train.

The nearest international airport is Zurich. Davos is not on the main Glacier Express route but connects to the broader Graubünden rail network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Alpengold Hotel or Steigenberger Belvédère — which suits me better?

A.Alpengold suits travelers who want contemporary design, a strong spa, and direct ski access in a property that feels genuinely of its environment. Steigenberger Belvédère suits those who want classical grand hotel atmosphere and historic continuity — it has been operating since 1875. Both have direct or near-direct Parsenn access; the choice is one of design philosophy.

Q.Should I stay in Davos or Klosters?

A.Davos is larger, better equipped for longer stays, and has more restaurant and facility variety. Klosters is smaller, quieter, and more discreet — traditionally preferred by guests who want a chalet-village atmosphere and privacy. They share the same ski area and are 10 minutes apart by train. Klosters suits short ski breaks; Davos suits longer stays requiring more infrastructure.

Q.When should I avoid Davos?

A.Late January during the World Economic Forum is not ideal unless you are attending — security is extensive, rates peak significantly, and some areas are restricted. The weeks immediately before (early January) and after (February) offer the same skiing with a considerably more relaxed atmosphere.
