Uri, Swiss Alps
The most significant transformation in Swiss Alpine tourism — still in progress.
Andermatt sits at the crossroads of four Alpine passes — Gotthard, Furka, Oberalp, and Susten — at around 1,440m in the Uri Alps. For most of the 20th century it functioned as a quiet military garrison town, largely overlooked by the luxury ski market.
The arrival of The Chedi Andermatt in 2013, followed by a broader resort development programme, changed that entirely. Today it offers world-class luxury infrastructure in a setting that has not yet been worn smooth by decades of mass tourism.
Andermatt's appeal is the combination of genuine quality and genuine discovery. The skiing is serious — high-alpine terrain with the Gemsstock peak at 2,963m — and The Chedi's spa infrastructure exceeds what many established resorts offer. Yet the resort still feels like something in formation rather than something completed.
This suits a specific traveler: someone who wants exceptional quality without the social scene of Gstaad or the mythological weight of St. Moritz. Those who want a destination with long-established prestige will find Andermatt's relative newness unsatisfying.
The Chedi Andermatt is the defining property — Asian-influenced design in an Alpine setting, multiple Michelin-recognised restaurants, a spa with an exceptionally long indoor pool, and ski-in ski-out access. It is one of the finest ski hotels in Switzerland by any measure.
The Radisson Blu Reussen offers a more accessible price point with strong facilities and a central village position — better for travelers who want the Andermatt experience at lower cost.
The resort development continues to add properties; the hotel offering will expand further in coming years.
December to April for skiing — the high-alpine terrain means reliable snow and serious skiing well into spring.
Summer from June to October is increasingly worth considering: the Andermatt Music Festival, a golf course, and hiking across the pass landscapes offer genuine quality. The village is quieter in summer but the infrastructure supports year-round stays.
Against Zermatt and St. Moritz, Andermatt has less history and social cachet — but comparable or superior luxury infrastructure, less crowding, and more available accommodation at peak periods.
Against Flims-Laax, Andermatt has higher-altitude skiing and The Chedi as a flagship anchor; Flims has stronger natural landscape identity and more established wellness infrastructure.
Andermatt is the right choice for travelers who prioritise quality and space over prestige and tradition.

Q.Is The Chedi Andermatt worth the premium?
A.For travelers who want one of Switzerland's finest ski hotel experiences, yes — the spa, the restaurants, and the ski access combination is difficult to match in the Alps. The premium reflects genuine quality rather than name alone. The Radisson Blu Reussen delivers a strong experience at a lower price point for travelers who want the Andermatt setting without The Chedi's rates.
Q.How does Andermatt compare to Zermatt for a ski holiday?
A.Andermatt has high-alpine terrain and luxury infrastructure comparable to Zermatt, but without the Matterhorn or the 170-year grand hotel history. It is less crowded, easier to book at peak periods, and arguably better value at the luxury level. Zermatt suits travelers for whom the mountain identity and history are important; Andermatt suits those who prioritise the skiing and hotel quality over prestige.
Q.What is the summer season like in Andermatt?
A.The summer season is growing but not yet as developed as the winter. The Andermatt Music Festival, a golf course, hiking across the pass landscapes, and the dramatic scenery of the Uri Alps make it worth considering. The Chedi stays open year-round and maintains its full quality in summer. Rates are lower than peak ski season.
